Workshop A LearningGames: A Resource for High Quality Child Care and Parenting Support.

Presenter: Kimberly Sparling

This session will provide an introductory look at LearningGames, a research-validated curriculum component that can strengthen child development and learning as well as family engagement in early childhood programs. These child-adult activities are presented attractively and simply but contain deep child development concepts and information. They are easily understood and flexible enough to be used by both early childhood professionals and parents and thus can help create a link or sense of collaboration between these two important groups. Participants will also learn about the 30+ years of scientific research that demonstrates the effectiveness of these materials and strategies.
Workshop B Making the Better Beginning, Better Futures Program Work.

Presenter: Ray DeV. Peters

This program incorporates into a single model the following aspects: 1) ecological view focusing on individual children, their families, and their neighbourhoods including child care and school programs; 2) holistic view of children; 3) universally available programs for all 4 to 8 year old and their families; 4) resident involvement in all aspects of the program; and 5) partnerships with local service health and educational organizations. Programs were designed at three levels: 1) child-focused; 2) parent-family focused; and 3) community focused. Specific program activities/components at each of these levels will be described and discussed in this workshop.
Workshop C Language Program- Cancelled
Workshop D Tools of the Mind: Developing Self-Regulation by Developing Intentional Make-Believe Play.

Presenter: Deborah J. Leong

This workshop is based on 15 years of work in the Tools of the Mind program helping teachers learn to scaffold play and will discuss how preschool and kindergarten teachers can improve the make-believe play skills of their students.
Workshop E Fluppy: A Program to Prevent Violence and Dropping out of School (kindergarten and first year of primary school).

Presenter: France Capuano

The workshop will look at: 1) the origins of the Fluppy program; 2) a description of its various components for intervention in kindergarten and in the first year of primary school; and 3) the current status of its implementation in Quebec.
Workshop F Supporting Mathematical Thinking and Skills in the Early Childhood Classroom.

Presenter: Prentice Starkey

After hearing a brief overview of children’s early mathematical development, workshop participants will engage in a hands-on exercise. Participants will then be shown how data from an assessment sheet can be used to monitor mathematical growth and guide future work with particular children. Classroom contexts for supporting math learning include whole-group, individual, and small-group settings. Pros and cons of each will be discussed and techniques for supporting math in each will be described. Finally, tips and workshop exercises on topics such as developing a mathematics curriculum plan, arranging classrooms to enhance math support, and empowering parents - including parents from non-English speaking families - will also be covered to help participants apply information acquired in the workshop to their classrooms and programs.
